Fund News and Notes

INSURANCE CARRIERS' FINANCIAL STATUS.  Our Fund holds contracts with a number of insurance companies (Disability through Standard Life, Voluntary Life Insurance and Voluntary Catastrophic Insurance through AIG and Voluntary Long-Term Care Insurance through John Hancock). Read statements from the John Hancock company here, Standard Life here, and a statement on AIG from the N.Y. State Dept. of Insurance here.

New Employees Guaranteed Acceptance for Voluntary Long-Term Care Insurance. New hires eligible for PSC-CUNY Welfare Fund benefits may enroll without proof of good health in the John Hancock Long Term Care program if they apply within 60 days after hire—an enrollment window that is now half-way closed for this semester’s new employees. Read more here.

John Hancock policy holders concerned about the company's standing in light of the recent volatility in financial markets can read a letter to customers from the company's Financial Services Chairman, Dominic D'Allessandro, here.

Health Benefits Transfer Period for Active Employees and Retirees. The annual transfer period for your basic health insurance is approaching, with dates to be announced by the city shortly. Because 2008 is an even-numbered year, retirees may also participate with active employees. Read more here.

Medicare Part B Premium Increases.  The Medicare Modernization Act of 2003 brought us Part D (drug coverage) and implemented–for the first time–a sliding scale premium for Part B (medical coverage). Read about the increases and pending reimbursement here.

Payroll Deduction Questions?  The Welfare Fund can only provide information on payroll deductions for Extended Disability insurance and the John Hancock Long Term Care Program. Information on other deductions is available from NYSUT at 1-800-626-8101.

Welfare Fund Replaces GHI with ASO, Inc. Program management of the Welfare Fund Extended Medical Benefit changed from GHI to Administrative Services Only, Inc. (ASO) on July 1, 2008. Click here for details.

Welcome to the PSC-CUNY Welfare Fund Website.  Your Welfare Fund is a Supplemental Fund supported by contributions from the City University of New York in accordance with the terms of the Collective Bargaining Agreement.

The Supplemental aspect refers to the nature of the benefits, principally dental, prescription drug, extended medical, disability, death benefits, optical and a variety of smaller benefits. These are all offered through the Welfare Fund.

Basic health benefits are provided directly through carriers such as GHI, HIP, Blue Cross and others. These are not part of the Welfare Fund. This website will allow you to access (link to) more information on those programs.

This website is a work in progress that Fund staff are updating and amending on a regular basis. We are providing the best information on our current benefits and changes that are coming into effect.

We hope you will be able to use this site to answer many of your questions and concerns and also use it to enhance your communications with the Fund Office.
